IN an era where heavy metal and gunge were male dominated, it is hard for a female vocalist band to stand out amongst the rest. This is where a certain Mrs. Cobain managed to defy the odds and brought about one of the greatest grunge bands in the 90s- Hole. Hole is a band that consists of Eric Erlandson (guitar), Melisa Auf Der Maur (bass), Patty Schemel (drums) and Mrs Cobain herself, Courtney Love (vocals). Celebrity Skin is a misunderstood melodic masterpiece, where besides the band themselves, several notable grunge icons like Billy Corgan (smashing pumpkins) played a key role in writing a few of their songs like Celebrity Skin, Hit So Hard, Malibu and Dying. Courtney Love might be a walking soap opera but she's every grunge's fan's wetdream.

Would you buy an album whose songs names you cant pronounce? You probably would if Melody Maker described the band as the sound of "God crying golden tears in heaven". Here we have a band from Iceland, Sigur Rus who released this album in 1999 and instantly became a phenomenal success both in native country and abroad.

This is a remarkable feat considering that the music is slow, singer/guitarist Jonsi often uses a cellow bow, and that the band sings in their own invented language called Hopelandic.

Boards of Canada proved that electronic music was not just intelectually stimulating but it could achieve real emotional depth as well. Guitarist Omar Rodriguez and singer Cedric Bixler formed The Mars Volta in 2001 to pursue their love of things outside the hardcore genre. They drew upon the influences from Omar's childhood in Puerto Rico and the experiences of their friend, Julio Venegas, a local artist in their hometown who committed suicide after suviving an overdose-induced coma. I was introduced to this band by my college fan Emir who up till this day has the greatest taste in music ever. The Mars Volta resemble a 21st century Led Zeppelin.

May say that this album is one big suicide note, a death anthem for many suicidals out there. Joy Division is a UK band formed in 1975 at Manchester. The band's most notable member, Ian Curtis (vocals) primarily does the song writing for this dark album. His last performance was in 1980 before he hanged himself in the kitchen of his house.

Smashing Pumpkins is one of my all time favourite bands and they dont produce bands that rock this hard anymore. I got this album when i was in my secondary school days. The song Soma has been my antidote for teen depression and angst for many years. Each individual in this band has a unique characteristic that made Smashing Pumpkins the hardest, meanest and "rockingest". Billy Corgan - sick, twisted and comes up with the wickest solos, James Iha - plain weird and goofy, D'Arcy - sexiest woman on stage and Jimmy CHamberlain - freaking four legged drummer.

Lets's look at something more recent. Kings Of Leon is an American band formed by the Followill brothers (Nathan, Caleb, Jared and cousin Matthew). This band has a distinctive 60s-70s rock and roll sound and it does without the pretentious experimentation of today's manufactured sound. Calbe's gravelly, old soak vocals fits nicely into thie band's music. Relatively new to my ears, i don have much preference to this band, unless i'm riding on desert highyway.

Sonic Youth is an American rock band formed on my birthyear, 1981 and comprises of Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, Lee Ranaldo, Mark Ibold and Steve Shelley. Sonic Youth part of the founders of alternative rock movement that swept across America in the 90s. Their 1991 tour in Europe was documented in the a documentary called '1991: The Year That Punk Broke". It was documented at a time when a very young band called Nirvana was just on the brink of massive international success. Kim Gordon will aways be the cover girl of Sonic Youth as she oozes with stage presence and sexyness. But all hail to Thurston and Lee for their freeform experimentalism in guitars such as alternative tunings, which greatly define the sound of Sonic Youth up till today.

Happy Mondays is a British band that fuses rhythmic guitars with influences of house music and funk. They were part of the 90s Madchester scene and personified rave culture. Highly popular in the 90s, the band's emergence coincided with the serious drug issues seen among teens in UK of that era. I first got to know of this band's existence from the movie "24 Hour Party People" which tells the story of the band's emergence in the Madchester scene.
